Andy’s Letter: Daily Special

I went to a local eatery recently and I noticed the usual Daily Special sign as I walked in the door. I always take a close look because the Daily Special is a better price than the regular price with something extra included like a drink or dessert. Even if I’m not interested in what’s on the sign, it’s a good deal and worthy of consideration. I won’t bother telling you what I had for lunch that day, but it got me to thinking. What are the Daily Specials in our lives? You know, the things that are usual and sometimes we ignore — some things that are ordinary and others that are extraordinary. Maybe we should pay a little closer attention to those daily things because in truth they really are quite special.

After the inordinate amount of rain we’ve had it seems the sunshine and warm weather is pretty special. The rain did not set records, but it was wetter than normal. Except for some delayed farm work we benefit from all the rain. There are some droughts going on around the nation and the world that may have serious consequences. As thankful as I am for the sun and the relief from the rain, however short or sporadic it may turn out to be, I guess I’m thankful for the rain, too. The weather is a Daily Special that is good everyday – rain or shine.

Here at the StateWide companies our loyal customers are a true Daily Special. They trust us with important and valuable transactions that run the gamut from oil changes to new vehicles to body work and much more. They support us with their business every day and allow us to bring the best products and services in the world to Van Wert and the rest of the state. I am thankful for all of them and for their continued patronage.

Sometimes a Daily Special is unseen and unheralded. Never featured on the sign at the door it deserves noting, however. At a restaurant it might be the spotless facility. Without clean floors, tables, equipment, plates and dishes we wouldn’t really care about the special on the sign. This invisible special undergirds the entire dining experience. And so it is with our lives and the political documents that hold together the fabric of our nation. Usually unseen, the United States Constitution allows our daily lives to go along smoothly and safely. In our land of law and order the Constitution is the most significant law of all. For it I am endlessly thankful and for the founding fathers who penned it. These were smart, thoughtful, and insightful citizens. They used forethought and insured the Constitution was flexible enough to withstand centuries of societal and cultural change. I am so thankful that I may need to bring it up again in a couple months as Constitution Day is September 17. This year that wise old document will be 228 years old.

So, for month #9 I am thankful for the Daily Specials that many often overlook. Without them our lives would be drastically different. From important political documents to the weather to loyal customers I give thanks. Now ¾ of the way through a year of thanks. Have you joined the growing gathering of gratitude givers, yet? “How Thankful Are You?”
