A Letter from Andy: Summer Over?

What?! Summer is nearly over? Yes, summer is drawing to a close and in Van Wert, Ohio that means more than Labor Day. It means it’s time for the Van Wert County Fair. This is the 158th county fair and that is a pretty big deal.

158 years ago Van Wert County hosted its first county fair. Agriculture was the biggest segment of the economy and nearly every other segment either supported it or relied on it. The year was 1856. Abraham Lincoln was merely a lawyer from Illinois after a failed run for the Senate and the Civil War was inconceivable to most citizens. Commerce and industry were still in their infancy in Northwest Ohio, and yet, the agricultural leaders of our county decided to put on a fair to celebrate and recognize the amazing productivity and promise of this rich farm ground that surrounds us. And so it goes today. Continue reading

You love having your furry little friend in the passenger seat, and they may love you for it, but if there’s the possibility of your pet being left in the car alone, sometimes it’s best to leave them in the comforts of an air conditioned home. On an 85-degree day, it only takes ten minutes for the inside of your car to reach 102 degrees even when the windows have been left open an inch or two. Within 30 minutes, a car’s interior can reach 120 degrees! The temperature outside may be a pleasant 70 degrees, but the inside of your car can be 20 degrees hotter; and against popular belief, shade offers little protection on a hot day and moves with the sun. I’m bored… Slightly amused and clearly annoyed when I hear it, I always wonder what someone who tells me this expects me to do. Should I do a song & dance? Take them to a movie? Perhaps suggest a handicraft for them to engage in? Continue reading
