“Do It for Them”

Do you know someone who has been affected by cancer? That is a question I already know the answer to. Of course you do. Cancer is so undiscriminating that every gender, race, age, economic strata, and geographic area is affected. If not someone close to you, then someone they know has had cancer. It is such a devastating blow when someone hears, “You have cancer.” What if you could help prevent even one person from hearing those words? Would you Do It for Them?

Now, right here in Van Wert is your chance to help. Van Wert has been chosen to participate in Cancer Prevention Sudy-3 (CPS-3). The American Cancer Society is conducting CPS-3 and the enrollment is at Gaylord E. Leslie Wellness Center on Fox Road from Noon till 5:30 on Wednesday, September 25. It is easy to get started by registering online at http://www.westcentralcps3.org or calling 888-604-5888 toll-free. Then attend the enrollment on September 25th.
It is not difficult to be part of CPS-3, but there are few things you should know. To be a participant you have to: 1) be between the ages of 30 and 65 years old; 2) never been diagnosed with cancer (does not include basal or squamous cell skin cancer); 3) commit to the study long-term and complete periodic follow-up surveys at home for the next 20-30 years.
The information gained through this study may help cure cancer, which is the ultimate goal. It will certainly increase the understanding of the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. This is the chance of a lifetime, literally, to do something that will make a difference to thousands and thousands every year.
The American Cancer Society says:
“If you’ve ever known someone with cancer, you know that each birthday is a very significant milestone. There are nearly 13.7 million people in America who have survived cancer and countless more who have avoided it who will be celebrating birthdays this year. Join the movement for more birthdays and fight back against cancer by enrolling in this new research study called the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).
The ultimate goal of CPS-3 is to enroll at least 300,000 adults from various racial and ethnic backgrounds from across the USA. Fundraising is how people usually support cancer research, but this is a chance to actively take part in an historic research study that will extend the lives of millions.”
So, will you Do It for Them? You know, those in your family, those who are your friends, those you’ll never meet, those who are going to get cancer – them. If I could, I would sign up for CPS-3. However, I was diagnosed with and I survived cancer after a grueling battle. I likely owe my life to someone who signed up for CPS-1 or CPS-2. That’s right, the current body of knowledge and treatments for cancer came in part from the information gained in previous studies. Maybe you want to give of yourself in this way to help others. Maybe you want to Do It for Them.
